The collar is the default — almost every dog wears one. But for walking, especially with a dog that pulls, a collar can cause serious harm over time. Here's what the research says, and what to use instead.
The Problem With Walking on a Collar
A dog that pulls against a collar applies direct pressure to their trachea, neck muscles, and lymph nodes. Studies in veterinary journals have linked collar-related leash pressure to:
- Tracheal damage and collapsed trachea (especially in small breeds)
- Intervertebral disc disease from repetitive neck jerking
- Elevated intraocular pressure (linked to glaucoma in dogs)
- Thyroid gland disruption from repeated compression
The risk is highest with dogs that pull consistently — which, without training, is most dogs.
What a No-Pull Harness Does Differently
A well-designed harness distributes pressure across the chest and shoulders rather than concentrating it on the neck. The key features to look for:
- Front-clip D-ring — Attaches at the chest. When the dog pulls, they naturally turn toward you rather than forward. Significantly reduces pulling without any training tools.
- Back-clip ring — Useful for dogs that already walk well, or for running. Gives more freedom of movement.
- Padded chest plate — Prevents chafing on the sternum during extended walks.
- Adjustable fit at 4+ points — Crucial. A harness that doesn't fit properly can restrict shoulder movement or allow escape.
When to Still Use a Collar
Collars are ideal for holding ID tags. For walks, especially with pullers, a harness is safer. Many trainers recommend using both: a harness for the leash, a collar for identification.
How to Fit a Harness Correctly
- Measure your dog's chest girth at the widest point (just behind the front legs)
- The harness should be snug but allow two fingers to slide underneath
- The chest plate should rest flat — not pressing into the armpit
- Check that shoulder movement is unrestricted — watch your dog walk and look for any hitching gait
